SXSW 2010 & The GeekyBeach Party

We had another amazing year at SXSW Interactive this year and finished it off with a “Geek” party that was off the hook!

If you attended SXSW this year you know that it was massive – the sessions, the traffic, the entire show this year was epic and we’re happy to be a part of it for the fourth year in a row. Each year, we get to meet more people, engage and create new relationships, and get the opportunity to speak with more and more of our customers. This year, we flew our entire Marketing team and Executive team from our Vancouver Canada office to Austin, TX to be a part of this experience and enjoy all that SXSW Interactive and Austin have to offer. It was great!

On Monday night, March 15th we held one of the biggest parties on 6th street at Ace’s Lounge – The GeekyBeach Party. From Go-Go dancers to a kick ass DJ and a surprise guest entertainer, local Austinite Neiliyo, we totally rocked geeked it! The turnout was amazing, the guests were awesome, and the staff at Ace’s Lounge made sure we all had a wonderful time.

PEER 1 Marks Milestones and Looks Ahead to Next Decade

On September 9, 2009 PEER 1 and ServerBeach celebrated the company’s 10 year anniversary worldwide that includes 360 employees in 12 offices around the world. What an amazing day this was. The company was divided into two teams, “Orange” and “Lime” and played a series of 10 games over a 24 hour duration and prizes were given. At the end of the day, PEER 1’s legendary Beer O’Clock began.

Our employee spirit is incredible. Fabio Banducci, President and CEO of PEER 1 says,

“Ten years is a long time in hosting and our anniversary celebration is a testament to the strength of our business. Investing in leading-edge technology to support our IT infrastructure, and investing in our people to deliver remarkable customer support are integral to our success. I congratulate our customers in the ongoing success of their businesses which PEER 1 is proud to support and I applaud the talent and dedication of our personnel around the world.”

To take this celebration one-step further, 4 of our employees took it upon themselves to show their pride and spirit by getting company tattoos which we blogged about in an earlier post, including a video of them getting these tattoos.

1st Edition of Superman Sells for $317,200 at ComicConnect Auction

We are excited to tell you about some great news regarding one of our customers, ComicConnect – the online marketplace for comic buyers and sellers. This fantastic ServerBeach customer of nearly three years recently held an online auction, resulting in the record-breaking comic book bid of $317,200!! The $317,200 comic is the first-ever Superman comic, “Action Comics #1”, and is considered to be one of the ten best-condition copies in existence.

There is an estimated 100 copies of “Action Comics #1” left, but most are in poor condition. The original owner of “Action Comics #1” bought the comic at a second-hand shop for 35 cents in 1951. He was nine years old at the time, and his dad thought that spending 35 cents for a comic that originally cost 10 cents was down-right silly, and a poor use of his son’s spending money!

Throughout the auction, ComicConnect experienced incredibly high traffic rates. ServerBeach helped ComicConnect prepare for the auction by upgrading its service, including installing an enterprise-grade server that could process the high activity levels. ServerBeach was very proud to support this effort and was able to confidently handle these extraordinary traffic volumes without any issues.

ComicConnect had great things to say! “ServerBeach went the extra mile to provide the hosting support we needed for this auction,” said Ben Smith, vice president of ComicConnect. “With a high profile online auction such as this, the ability to scale to support peak traffic flow is imperative and everything went off without a hitch. We worked closely with ServerBeach to prepare for the auction and our account representative was available at all times to address any potential hardware or software issues common with this intensive type of online event.”

Hosting Providers, We Challenge You to a Race

PEER 1 President, Fabio Banducci

As many of you know, our parent company PEER 1 participated in the 24 Hours of Lemons endurance race in Kershaw, South Carolina last year. We will be participating in this event again this year at the No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose Louisiana, June 6th to 7th.

This year, PEER 1 is planning something a little different. This year, we are challenging all hosting providers in the state of Texas. Yes, you read correctly: WE WANT YOU!

Are you up to the challenge? Do you have what it takes to participate against PEER 1 in the 24 Hours of Lemons race? Join us June 5th  and 6th at the No Problem Raceway in Belle Rose, Louisiana and let’s find out! So what is 24 Hours of Lemons?

Nasty. Brutish. Not Short Enough.

The crowd. The spectacle. The pall of blue smoke and roasted clutch discs. In all motorsport, no event captures the universal human need to whale on old crapcans and hoover down greasy barbecue like the 24 Hours of LeMons.

Each LeMons race is for cars purchased, fixed up, and track-prepped for a total of 500 dollars or less. But before reaching the grid, you’ll have to survive trials like the Personal-Injury-Lawyer Anti-Slalom, the Marxist-Valet Parking Challenge, and the Wide Open Throttle Rodthrowapalooza. Twelve hours into the race, the car voted People’s Choice is called in and awarded a cash prize; simultaneously, the car voted People’s Curse is called in and summarily destroyed. At the end of 24 hours, a gala awards ceremony plies the survivors with trophies, plaques, and four-figure purses in canvas bags full of nickels. What’s not to like?” — 24 Hours of Lemons website

Windows – Everything You Need To Know

We’re all familiar with the BSD (Blue Screen of Death) when it comes to Windows. Perhaps you’ve experienced the ever so popular “missing dll errors”, spyware, or the time consuming defragging.

Some feel that Windows just offers a little too much, leaving your system feeling bloated and sluggish. We all want our computers to run as fast as possible and while there is hardware out there that is available to accomplish this, you won’t get it without a not-so-pretty price tag.

Lifehacker has posted a great article that provides information on how to get the most out of the above mentioned situations, as well as dual booting your computer, automatically backing up your hard drive, making the most out of dual monitors, and much more. You can read more over at the Lifehacker site here: http://lifehacker.com/5118066/everything-you-need-to-know-how-to-do-in-windows
