Linux: Finding rootfs during boot

I read anything and everything around the Internet regarding Linux tips, tricks, and how-to documentation. A great resource that I visit regularly is developerWorks, in the their technical library over at IBM. We’ve all seen the errors, “cannot mount rootfs” and “kernel panic” more times than we’d like to remember so I thought I’d share an article from the guys over at developerWorks that outlines the Linux booting process on an x86 platform, shows why this problem happens, and offers four tips to avoid it or fix it.
